Volume 16 · Issue 1 © Appl. Rheol. 16 (2006) 14– 18 Abstract: The yielding behavior of two model electrorheological suspensions of uncoated silica particles and silica coated with polyaniline base in silicone oil using controlled shear rate and controlled shear stress experiments has been analyzed. The results demonstrate that unlike the uncertain dynamic yield stress values estimated from the results obtained in the former mode by extrapolation of the unsteady shear stresses to zero shear rate, the controlled shear stress measurement permits to detect sensitively the region starting from the initial rupture of particle chain structure in the electric field at rest corresponding to a static yield stress ty and ending in total breakage of suspension structure at a breaking stress tb.. The latter quantity can be detected with a good accuracy and proved to be a reliable criterion of the stiffness of ER structure.

Quasi-static electrorheological properties of hematite/silicone oil suspensions under DC electric fields.

In this work, a modified rheometer has been used to gain information on the "start-up" of the shear flow of an electrorheological (ER) fluid consisting of hematite particles dispersed in silicone oil. The results show that unelectrified suspensions behave essentially as fluids, continuously deforming upon application of shear. However, this behavior changes in the presence of an electric field....

Development and Testing of an Electronically Controlled Shock and Vibration Damper Having an Electrorheological Fluid Medium

Electrorheological (ER) materials are suspensions of micron sized particles in insulating, dielectric fluids. The mechanical properties of these materials can be controlled by regulating an electric field through them. Variable properties include stiffness, damping, and yielding behavior. At high electric fields, material property changes are rapid and immediately reversible. ER technology has ...

Relation of Lamellar Structure and Shear Stress of Dynamic Pm-er Fluids∗

To understand the dynamic rheological behavior of polar molecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids, the shear stress and viscosity of the colloids are compared with the parameters of their lamellar structures which are obtained simultaneously with the rheological characteristics using an electrorheoscope. The results of the experiments and molecular dynamics simulation indicate that the shear s...

Structure of electrorheological fluids under an electric field and a shear flow: experiment and computer simulation.

It is known that macroscopic properties of colloidal suspensions are often determined by the microstructure of the particles in the suspensions, depending on the interparticle, Brownian, and hydrodynamic (if any) forces. We take electrorheological (ER) fluids as an example. By using a computer simulation and an experimental approach, we investigate the structure of ER fluids subjected to both a...

Rheology of concentrated carbon nanotube suspensions.

The rheological properties of non-Brownian carbon nanotube suspensions are measured over a range of nanotube volume fractions spanning the transition from semidilute to concentrated. The polymer-stabilized nanotubes are "sticky" and form a quiescent elastic network with a well-defined shear modulus and yield stress that both depend strongly on nanotube volume fraction with different but related...
